Christmas Tipping Jamboree
A betting colleague yesterday commented to me that he could not back (or tip) a particular horse running last night because, during a stable visit some months ago, the horse had bitten him! This was in spite of the fact the horse fared pretty well on his ratings.
I understand exactly where he’s coming from – nobody is likely to look fondly upon a creature that tried to make a snack of you!
The reason I mention it is that it reminded me of something that happened during a stable visit I went on bac…

Multiples Madness
It was a funny old weekend, though I was finding it hard to laugh at 4pm on Saturday.
I decided to have a hefty swing at the Scoop6 because of the rollover and managed to find 3 winners. Stupidly the 3 I missed were Poungach, Sizing Europe and Deep Purple, 2 of them favourites and, worse than that, all 3 of them included in my original perms.
Unfortunately my original perms ran to about 4k in stakes which just wasn't a feasible option! I narrowed it down to a manageable size bet and, in the proces…

"This great National Hunt sport of ours has a habit of producing horses which become household favourites for many years. The key to following these horses financially or otherwise is to get on board before the ship departs the port.
Having reviewed a recent race from Down Royal I have a firm belief that we may be about to see the emergence of yet another equine superstar.
The name of the aforementioned beast is KAUTO STONE.
Now burdened with a name such as that and trained at the …

BBC Sports Personality of the Year
Just a short post today I’m afraid, my dear people.
I was intending to post tomorrow but I just read a brief analysis of the Top 3 Market for BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The analysis made a lot of sense to me and I thought I’d get a post out now as the price I like could disappear.
The analysis appeared in the Oddschecker “Odds Squad” daily update email and I’ve reproduced it in full below:

Trade of the Day and Hennessy Reasoning
John Mac, our race analyst writes:
A few readers have asked how and why I selected the two horses I have done for the Hennessy. My reasoning is below.
Initially I checked the weather forecast which revealed that although rain is forecast it is not anticipated to be of biblical proportions so, heavy dew combined with moderate temperatures means we should end up with ground just on the soft side of good, pretty much as it is reported to be now.
On that basis I would expect my two selections to be abl…

Hennessy Gold Cup Glory Awaits
John Mac, our race analyst writes:
When evaluating any race, the key element in the multi piece jigsaw puzzle is what the ground conditions are likely to be. This in itself can be something of a game of Russian Roulette, further complicated by historical performances which are quantified and recorded by many. I would like to bring to your attention an article written recently by the much respected if somewhat quirky race reader/come journalist Nick Mordin, which highlights the quandary which we a…

The Power of the Portfolio
Does a diverse “portfolio” of tipsters and systems really work?
In investing in general, it is a well understood principle that having a portfolio of investments helps spread your risk. Diversification means you “don’t have all your eggs in one basket". But does it work when you are betting on sports/horses as your investment vehicle? It can have great advantages – you are unlikely to be wiped out by one catastrophic event (losing run) and underperformers are theoretically counterbalanced by over…
John Mac PP Gold Cup Selection

'A very competitive race but with Poquelin heading the weights it leaves 8 of the field out of the handicap and gives them a very difficult job to win in those circumstances. Of those that can run off their correct mark the really interesting horse for me is CALGARY BAY.
He has always been the apple of his veteran trainer’s eye but has seldom delivered to his full potential. This race represents a very realistic chance for him to finally repay, the often blind, faith she has shown…

November Handicap Selection
3.10pm Doncaster 05-11-11
Selection: STATUS SYMBOL 18/1 Sky bet, 16/1 Generally (The price has moved since John wrote this, now 16/1 with Boylesports and Stan James). Recommended as an each way bet.
No great story to tell with this one other than I consider the horse a big player in tomorrow’s November Handicap and his uncomplicated front-running style should give us a really good run for our money. No negatives with this fellow whatsoever with the prevailing conditions so, plain and simple, if…
