Nicks Punting Diary - W/C 24-06-13

After the drama and excitement of Royal Ascot I was pretty shattered and decided a good few days away from the betting world would do me good.

In fact, I had more or less decided to take a week off and then get stuck in to the two-day Newcastle meeting on Friday and Saturday.  I stuck to my guns admirably until a text message came through on Thursday evening.

Basically it went like this – “Chester races Friday evening, free train ticket, free entry to Final Furlong enclosure, free carvery and a fr…

Nick's Punting Diary - Royal Ascot Part 2

Usually after the highs there are the inevitable lows, especially when it comes to the world of horse racing and betting.  I’ve had a cracking first three days of this year’s Royal Ascot festival.  I await the reaper of misfortune to visit me at some point during Day 4 and 5.

Ascot Festival Day 4.

The Tipster

Sandiva looks a decent bet in the Albany and she’s my first tip @11/4.  I look to take on Battle Of Marengo in the King Edward VII and I put up Contributer as an each way selection @14/1.  In …

Nicks Punting Diary - Royal Ascot (Part 1)

This week’s diary all revolves around Royal Ascot.  As you will see, there were highs, lows and (almost) something truly incredible.  It all added up to a rollercoaster week that left me content, yet shattered and in need of a day off work.

Festival betting is difficult, especially the big two - Cheltenham and Royal Ascot.  Take Royal Ascot for instance and the typical races we see.  30 runner cavalry charges (who will put it all together on the day?); 20+ runner 2yo races full of unexposed types…

You Need These Three Things To Be A Professional Gambler

Today, we have a guest post from Paul Whelan of Skybluekangaroo

You Need These Three Things To Be A Professional Gambler

Professional gambler. Pro punter. Full-time bettor.

What images do these words bring about in your mind’s eye?

Is it the cool, calculating card shark, sat at the poker table in some Las Vegas casino (Phil Ivey, perhaps?) taking down pot after pot from the gullible high-rollers.

Or do you imagine the shrewd ‘face’ at the race course, stepping out from the crowd in the betting rin…

Nick's Punting Diary w/c 10-06-13

With Royal Ascot around the corner I need to keep things sensible this week as I know I will be having some decent bets over the course of the festival.

That said, I decide to sit out the first three days of the week and have a punt on the US Open golf Championship.  I do not know much about golf, and I really don’t follow it, so I rely on a couple of tips from a good friend who can politely be described as a “golfing nut”.

Phil Mickelson each-way (5 places) @20/1 is what is advised and I get on t…

Royal Ascot Day One Preview

Sir Henry, Frankel and Royal Ascot plans...

It’s been a long time since I’ve been really moved by the loss of a public figure. However, I’m not ashamed to admit that news of the passing of Sir Henry Cecil on Tuesday brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye.

I don’t have any personal stories to tell of the man nor can I claim to have met him beyond catching glimpses of him many times at racecourses around the country. What I can say is that his achievements as one of the greatest trainers to ever grace our sport is one thing.

It’…

Nick's Punting Diary

Nick's Punting Diary To say my life is hectic is an understatement on a par with saying the Charge of the Light Brigade was a “slight military misjudgement”. However, in a perverse way it has helped my betting profitability no end.  I will reveal all another time, but, for now, this week is no different - with my boss away in the USA I have to do his work as well as mine (although I could make a strong case that this is no different from any normal week).  Planning ahead I had decided that this …

Nick's Punting Diary

Got a couple of things for you today and first up is this week's instalment of Nick's Punting Diary:

Nick's Punting Diary - Derby Weekend

The week’s punting starts on Tuesday in Japan and the J-League football.  J-league football usually means one thing – goals.

The 2 games feature sides whose stats and form tell me we are in for a treat.  I place my usual doubles of over 2.5 goals, both teams to score and, feeling optimistic, two singles and a tasty double on over 3.5 goals.

The games finish 0-0 an…

Whitsun Bank Holiday

Today, Nick Hardman takes a look back over his Bank Holiday Weekend of punting:

Before I begin in earnest, I want to wind the clock back a couple of years.  At that time I would wake up on a Saturday morning with a sense of bravado and a belief that today would be the day I made some serious money.

This was almost certainly down to two things - no work and loads of sport.  Come Saturday evening my feelings were usually very different and, inevitably, Sunday became “chasing” day.

Historically Saturd…
