King John's Castle Scuppers Me Again

Not the most auspicious start to a Cheltenham Festival  that I can remember ( at least on the betting front).

As regular readers will know, by far my largest antepost bet of the festival was on the mighty Peddlers Cross. I'd got the best of it - he went off at a fifth of the price I backed him at last year, he got to the track fit and fancied and he ran an exceptional race. The only problem being Hurricane Fly ran a better one. I have no complaints - the better horse won on the day and I'm only i…

Cheltenham Daily Banker Tipping Competition

So here we are again.

Another year has passed and Cheltenham Festival has arrived with all the excitement and trepidation that comes with it.

To add a little extra spice, I thought we could have a small tipping competition for readers as a thank you for listening to my mad ramblings for the last few months. It is a winner takes all competition for a prize of £30.

The competition will work like this:
  • Entrants select one horse per day for each day of the festival. Please email your selection to me …

The Importance of Value

Forgive me for the lateness of this post. I've only just emerged from three days of mourning following the events of Tuesday night. I knew Arsenal would struggle with Barcelona's passing and movement but I never envisaged us receiving quite such a men against boys style schooling. I was convinced we wouldn't struggle quite so much for possession in the middle of the park. How wrong I was.

They passed us to death and then on the extremely rare occasions we actually got the ball they closed us down…

3-2 to the Arsenal and My Festival Banker

To start I thought I would give a quick mention to what is by far the most important event of the day and one that has ensured I'll be a bag of nerves all afternoon.

My beloved Arsenal return to the Nou Camp this evening, scene of their 4-1 humiliation last April and I'm not sure I could endure a similar result this time around.

I'm managing to cling on to some hope. I think we are a considerably better side this year and I can't see us being bossed in the middle of the park in the same way as las…

Ruby's Folly, Peddlers Cross and One at Lingfield Today

No one has more respect than I for the horsemanship of Ruby Walsh and it is certainly not for me to tell him anything about the way a horse should be ridden.

But I have to admit to feeling a little disappointed by his comments in the Racing Post this morning regarding the timing of his return to race riding after breaking his leg last November.

Jason Maguire picked up a ban last week which means he will miss the ride on Peddlers Cross in the Champion Hurdle (unless he can manage to get it overturn…

Three for today and A Farewell to MA Jarvis

Welcome One and All,

Friday is here again and another week is almost over.

Where is the year going?  The festival  will be here and gone in a matter of 3 weeks and then the flat season will be upon us.

Speaking of Flat racing, I was very sad to hear the news of Michael Jarvis's retirement due to ill health. A shrewder, more knowledgable, more experienced trainer would be hard to find and I for one will miss him. He has held a trainers licence for 43 years and has trained some amazing horses. He has…

Dancing Cows, A "good thing" in the Bumper and my Grand National Tale of Woe

Howdy folks,

I'll start today's fairly short post with a mention for a horse running this afternoon in the rescheduled meeting at Newbury.

The Henderson/Geraghty pairing have Ericht running in the bumper at 3.35pm and the word from the stable is that this one has improved in leaps and bounds from his last run and is confidently expected to win and win well. He's not the most exciting selection at a current price  of 7/4 with Paddy Power and Betfred but I could see him going off considerably shorte…

Getting Hitched and Marrakech Meanderings

Welcome one and all

This blogging lark aint as easy as it looks you know!

I've lost track now of the number of times I've offered heartfelt apologies for my inability to post on a more regular basis. Life continues to throw a spanner in the works and prevent me from delivering 2 or 3 reasoned and hopefully interesting posts each and every week.

I do, I feel,  have a reasonable excuse on this occasion though - I got married on 29th January and was then out of the country on honey moon for a week or …
