Glorious Goodwood - Day 5

After getting off the mark with his Day 4 Nap, Nick Hardman is back in an effort to end the festival with a flourish!

A big sigh of relief as Montiridge (NAP) wins on Friday and I just hope anyone brave enough (or daft enough!) to follow my NAP took the 7/4 on Wednesday evening!

On to the final day and here are my thoughts for Saturday.

Goodwood Day 5 (03/08/2013)

2.40 RAC Handicap – Elidor (NAP) @8/1 or higher

For Saturday’s NAP I am going to skip the two feature races (Nassau Stakes and Stewards C…

Glorious Goodwood - Naps Days 3 and 4

Nick Hardman is back with a look at Days 3 and 4 of the Goodwood festival. I don’t know about you guys but I’m not having the best of festivals so far with my own selections! Just a solitary winner in Cap O’Rushes @9/2, who I dutched with Excess “could I have been any more unlucky” Knowledge in the Gordon Stakes. Run that race another 10 times and John Gosden’s horse will win every time. Apart from that, a couple of second placed refunds and a non-runner have been the highlights. So on to Days 3…

Glorious Goodwood Days 1 and 2

Resident racing writer Nick Hardman gives us his thoughts on the best bets on Days 1 and 2 of Glorious Goodwood.   Goodwood Day 1 (30/07/2013) 3.05 Bet365 Lennox Stakes (Group 2) – Producer (NAP) @11/2 As ever, Richard Hannon looks likely to end the festival as top trainer, especially as he is mob handed in most races. He looks to hold a strong hand in the Lennox Stakes, the feature race on Tuesday. His two entries, Producer and Professor come here at the top of their game and I expect them both…

Nick's Punting Diary w/c 08-07-13

One of the things about betting is that the outcome of a bet will always elicit an emotional response - either joy if the bet wins or disappointment if the bet loses.  If you are one of those punters whose emotional response is at either extreme then the chances are you are losing more  than you make.  If your emotional range is narrow then you probably have the mentality needed to make some profits in this game.

On that note, I am often asked what gives me more joy - the financial reward of a wi…

Nick's Punting Diary w/c 01-07-13

It’s all quiet this week on the betting front as I recover from the shenanigans of the free day out to Chester races.  I decide to sit the week out and wait until the weekend.  As far as horse racing goes I am becoming more selective the older I get and I seem to be concentrating my efforts at the weekend.

It’s the final test of the British Lions tour to Australia and a conversation at work turns to a gentleman’s bet of £5.  I really fancy Australia.  They dominated possession and territory in th…

Nicks Punting Diary - W/C 24-06-13

After the drama and excitement of Royal Ascot I was pretty shattered and decided a good few days away from the betting world would do me good.

In fact, I had more or less decided to take a week off and then get stuck in to the two-day Newcastle meeting on Friday and Saturday.  I stuck to my guns admirably until a text message came through on Thursday evening.

Basically it went like this – “Chester races Friday evening, free train ticket, free entry to Final Furlong enclosure, free carvery and a fr…

Nick's Punting Diary - Royal Ascot Part 2

Usually after the highs there are the inevitable lows, especially when it comes to the world of horse racing and betting.  I’ve had a cracking first three days of this year’s Royal Ascot festival.  I await the reaper of misfortune to visit me at some point during Day 4 and 5.

Ascot Festival Day 4.

The Tipster

Sandiva looks a decent bet in the Albany and she’s my first tip @11/4.  I look to take on Battle Of Marengo in the King Edward VII and I put up Contributer as an each way selection @14/1.  In …

Nicks Punting Diary - Royal Ascot (Part 1)

This week’s diary all revolves around Royal Ascot.  As you will see, there were highs, lows and (almost) something truly incredible.  It all added up to a rollercoaster week that left me content, yet shattered and in need of a day off work.

Festival betting is difficult, especially the big two - Cheltenham and Royal Ascot.  Take Royal Ascot for instance and the typical races we see.  30 runner cavalry charges (who will put it all together on the day?); 20+ runner 2yo races full of unexposed types…

Nick's Punting Diary w/c 10-06-13

With Royal Ascot around the corner I need to keep things sensible this week as I know I will be having some decent bets over the course of the festival.

That said, I decide to sit out the first three days of the week and have a punt on the US Open golf Championship.  I do not know much about golf, and I really don’t follow it, so I rely on a couple of tips from a good friend who can politely be described as a “golfing nut”.

Phil Mickelson each-way (5 places) @20/1 is what is advised and I get on t…
